DUKE McKENZIE clearly deserves some investment in
his future after dealing ruthlessly with substitute Chris
Clarkson in five rounds at the Town Hall. There is a
danger that the former IBF flyweight champion could
become complacent after another undemanding outing
against a man who was never in with a chance of
winning.

DRUG USAGE remains a problem for boxing authorities.
The Nevada Commission fines Greg Haugen $25,000
for failing a test and forces Greg to serve 200 hours of
community work, undergo random tests and accept
counselling and rehabilitation for a year. Sounds good,
but at the same time Haugen signs to fight a return
against Hector Camacho for $1.2 million plus $50,000
in expenses.

IT IS with much sadness that I report the death of my
old friend Richard Armah, former middleweight, who
came to Britain from Ghana in 1948 and settled here. He
would have been 71 on April 24. For several years he
had been confined to a wheelchair, but his spirit had
always been as strong as ever. His passing came as a
great shock.

PETER CULSHAW came of age one month before his 18th birthday at the Aston Villa
Leisure Centre with one of the most decisive wins of the night over reigning ABA
light-flyweight champion Nick Tooley. In the first bout of the 23 bout All-England
semi-finals of the George Wimpey ABA championships the young Liverpool boxer
won in the second round when referee Keith Brooking had no option but to apply the
automatic closure after the normally tough and resilient Tooley (Dawlish) had taken
four standing counts.
