BRITAIN has a new world threat in John Conteh,
who hammered the European light-heavyweight
title from Germany's Rudiger Schmidtke in 12 engrossing
rounds at the Empire Pool.
Liverpool's 21-year-old
Conteh elevated himself into
the front rank of contenders
for Bob Foster's title as he
outclassed Schmidtke and
reduced the German to a
blood-spattered, stumbling
target.
CHRIS FINNEGAN retained his British and Commonwealth
light-heavyweight titles and proved he
still has a few good fights left in him by soundly
outpointing Roy John over 15 rounds.
THE season started badly for Repton flyweight Roy
Hilton when, called in at the last minute to box
for London against West Berlin at BANTAMWEIGHT,
he was stopped in two rounds by the vastly
experienced Engin Yadigar.
SCOTTISH light-middleweight champion Cy Harrison (Glenrothes.) had a
first-round scare before stopping game Johnny Evans (Epsom and Ewell)
in the third round on the Denbeath show, Leven Community Centre.
