CROYDON based ABA middleweight champion Frank
Lucas (Sir Phillip Game) stole the thunder and headlines
in the Commonwealth Games, in Christchurch, New
Zealand, by winning a gold medal.
CANTERBURY provided the biggest entry for the
Kent ABA championships at Dover Town Hall, and
came away with four titles in the heaviest weight
divisions.
Leading the Canterbury
title quest was last year's
ABA iight-heavyweigiit
semi-finalist John Rice, but
this time he campaigned at
h e a v y w e i g h t to allow
clubmate Roy Williams to
take the light-heavy class.
Colleagues Dave Smith and
Steve Ransley completed
the line up of champions.
ABA light-middleweight
champion Roger Maxwell
(Army) suffered a disqualification
defeat in the first Combined
Services team championships
match of 1974, but
the Army still managed to
finish 6-4 victors over the RAF,
at RAF Odlham.
TERRY DOWNES, who was as Cockney as jeUied
eels, learned his c r a s h - b a s h f i g h t i n g style in
America. Willie Pastrano, a prototype of the ail-
American boy, boxed with a classic style, amended
to modem speed, that we proudly claim as typically
English.
