THE AMAZING Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles cemented his
claims to be ranked with the greats of the welterweight
division when he slammed top contender Hedgemon Lewis
into ninth-round defeat at Mexico City on Saturday. It was
Napoles' seventh defence of the title he had regained by
stopping Billy Backus in I97I, and his second win over the
Los Angeles-based Lewis.
BILLY AIRD and Eddie Neilson,
friends and sparmates
since Neilson first turned pro in
1972, may face each other in
serious competition at Reading
Town Hall on September 19.
The match would replace the
Neilson v Les Stevens bout,
which fell apart when Stevens
split with manager/promoter
Bev Walker.
THE Australian light-heavyweight title must seem like a mirage to Steve Aczel,
who scored another fine win on July 25 when he disposed of Tommy Mears, the
former British policeman, in the sixth of a scheduled 10-rounder at Blacktown.
