FOR British welterweight champion John H.
Stracey, the apprenticeship is over. He crashed the
world rankings last month with a fourth-round win
over Jack Tillman, and earned quick reward with a
£15,000 plus offer to meet Roger Menetrey for the
European title in Paris on May 24.
A LOT of people seem to think it is just a formality
that John Conteh will clobber Chris Finnegan at
Wembley on May 21 and then go on to challenge
Bob Foster for the world light-heavyweight title.
Chris Finnegan does not share this view.
WOLVERHAMPTON'S Larry Paul returns to his
home-town on Wednesday to make the first defence
of his British light-middleweight title against old
amateur rival Kevin White, of Wells, at the Civic
Hall.
WEST HAM light-middle Jimmy Batten dropped a
bombshell after losing to Commonwealth Games bronze
medallist Robbie Davies (Birkenhead) in the semi-finals
of the English ABA Championships at the City Hall, Hull.
Batten, 18, announced he was finished with boxing.
