IT was at Paisley Ice Rink on
October 25, 1961, that young
Walter McGowan, of Hamilton, first
enhanced his reputation as a
potential candidate for flyweight
honours when he lost narrowly on
points to Scottish champion Jackie
Brown, of Edinburgh, who at that
time was also one of the two leading
contenders for the vacant British
crown.
NO doubt about the chief talking-point this week. It's the ABA
Chaiiipionships at Wembley Pool, the Night Of The Year as
far as the amateurs are concerned. We have four defending champions.
featherweight Billy Wilson, light-welter Brian Brazier, welter
johnny Prltchett and middle Alf Matthews. Just how many of this
quartet will be victorious again remains to be seen? Man who
seems to have the most trouble on his plate is Brazier, who will
be attempting to win his third successive crown. Brian may have
to oppose Dick McTaggart in either the semi-final or the final.
And having got this far Dick will be anxious to win a fourth ABA
crown.
