TWELVE hours after the brief battle of Madrid in which Spanish heavyweight
champion Jose Urtain ruthlessly ripped the European crown from
the head of Britain's Jack Bodell, tentative discussions started for Urtain
to defend the title against Danny McAlinden in England.

RICHARD DUNN, the man who hopes one day to
become British heavyweight champion, had his recent
success-streak torn to shreds by Rocky Campbell,
who knocked him out in the first round at Wolverhampton.
Campbell, whose record in 1971 hadn't
been too bright, was over the moon. It was a great
win by any standards.

WHEN a man says " It's good to be back" with such
pleasure as Gerry McNally, then you can imagine the
feeling. Gerry's active boxing career finished some years
ago. He gained many successes, with wins over stars like
Yolande Pompey and Alex Buxton, and has always had
the urge to return in some capacity or other, although he
has a successful bjilding business in Camberley, Surrey.
Last summer he thought his chance had come, when
South African promoter Doug Dolan came over to Britain.
Gerry had boxed for Doug nine years previously, and the
latter now wanted a British agent.
They came over to see me, and the idea seemed good,
but having been out of the game for so long Gerry would
have found it difficult. So he recommended A1 Phillips,
and as far as I know the arrangement was satisfactory.
But now Gerry is back as a trainer, looking after Reading
heavyweight. Les Stevens.
Gerry told me: " We met recently at an amateur show
in Reading, but I already knew Les and his father. I
jumped at the chance of training him. It means I am
involved with boxing again, which is what I have always
wanted, and I know I've got a good prospect in Les.
I'll go further. I think he'll be a champion within
18 months.

VENEZUELAN Vicente Rondon retained his World Boxing
Association light-heavyweight title with an eight-round
knockout over battered challenger Doyle Baird of Akron,
Ohio, at the Cleveland Arena. The rugged Baird, 33, was
cut over both eyes and had blood pouring from his nose
when he was helped back to his corner at the end of the
fight.
