INDIAN icon Mary Kom may have lost her flyweight spot to new-comer Pinki Jangra in trials
ahead of the Commonwealth Games. But Kom settled the score when she beat Jangra on
August 27, reclaiming the Slkgs place. She'll go to the Asian Games which begin this month.
Kom won India's only boxing medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
UNBEATEN Nicaraguan Roman
"Chocolatito" Gonzalez collected a
world championship at a third different
weight after whipping defending WBC
flyweight titlist Akira Yaegashi at the
Yoyogi #2 Gymnasium on a card staged
by Ohashi Promotions.
Gonzalez, 27, who has previously held
WBA belts at strawweight and light-fly,
floored his Yokohama-based opponent
in the third session, and steadily piled up
points before decking the bruised and
battered Yaegashi again in the ninth. This
second knockdown led referee Michael
Griffin to halt the bout at the 2-24 mark.
One-time title challenger Freddy
Hernandez has now lost seven of his
last eight. Ironically that one win was
against world-class Luis Collazo. Say
this for Hernandez, no one has ever
done him any favours. The Mexico City
fighter has always been matched tough
but at 35, those fights have taken a toll.
Hernandez is the epitome of a shot
fighter He was cut up pretty badly and
stopped at 1 -36 of the sixth round of a
10 against Louisiana's Brad Solomon.
2012 Olympic light-heavyweight gold
medallist Egor Mekhontsev scored
his fifth stoppage in as many outings,
dropping Californian Samuel Miller
twice before it was waved off at 2-11
of the third round. It was scheduled
for eight rounds. At 29, the Russian is
certainly not too old by any standards,
but sometimes you have to wonder why
some top European amateurs wait so
long before turning professional.
FIVE weeks to the day after the
curtain came down on the old
season, domestic boxing returned
with the Metrodome hosting this
Carl Greaves promotion.
Topping the bill in a scheduled
10-rounder for the vacant British
Masters title, local middleweight
Ben Davies, l i s t 5lbs and 5-2-1
(2), went in with now-3-1 (1)
Warwick novice Mike Byles, but a
badly swollen left eye, the result of
a busy start from Byles ( l i s t 3lbs),
put paid to his hopes, referee John
Latham waving it off 52 seconds
into the third after twice consulting
the doctor.
