MARTIN MURRAY has been
stripped of his Interim WBA
middleweight strap after failing to
defend It since November 2012.
But the St Helens' fighter's hopes
of challenging Gennady Golovkin
appear to have been boosted after
he signed a three-fight, sevenfigure,
promotional deal with
Golden Gloves. Murray - recently
split with Hatton Promotions
citing a lack of opportunities
- is scheduled to fight in June,
November, and February 2015.
FORMER South African
heavyweight champion Gerrie de
Bruyn has died at the age of 75.
De Bruyn, who would have
turned 76 on March 26, fought the
likes of Buster Mathis, Mike Holt,
Billy Lotter and Jimmy Richards in a
23-12-3 (17) career. A three-time
SA amateur champion, he won a
bronze medal at the Commonwealth
Games in Wales. But he later spent
more than 40 years in a wheelchair
after suffering a back injury in an
accident on a building site.
He passed away at the
Roseacres Clinic in Primrose,
Germiston, on Saturday morning.
HODDESDON Boxing Academy
staged a Saturday afternoon
show in their Robert Gilling Hall
gym on February 22, when the
10 bouts produced a pleasing
spectacle.
The hosts' ABA hopefuls Alfie
Price and George Crotty, both
southpaws, won unanimously
against good opponents in
"elite open class" contests
boxed over three-threes without
headguards.
Light-welter Price controlled the
distance well and scored with lefts
against Jacob Gabriel, although
the Basingstoke boxer enjoyed
some success when Alfie stood and
traded.
