IT'S easy to sympathise with WBO
lightweight champion Ricky Burns,
despite the Scot's in-ring success. The
Coatbridge man is perennially - and
unfairly - blamed for matters either
beyond his control or falsely diagnosed as
evidence of flaws in his character.
Take the recent claims that Burns had
avoided WBC counterpart Adrien Broner
- the second time critics have insinuated
that Ricl<y has dodged the touted
American. When the two were originally
set on a collision course - with Burns as
WBO l<ing in the division below and Broner
his mandatory contender - Britain's most
improved fighter was forced by longstanding
weight-making difficulties to

Farreli has revealed to Boxing
News the full extent of the brain
injury he suffered following his
shocking collapse in the ring after
his thrilling 10-round points loss to
Manchester rival Anthony Crolla
for the vacant English lightweight
title on December 7.

THE British Lionhearts, Britain's
franchise in the World Series of
Boxing, held their first fixture in
London at Earl's Court on December
1 4 against the German Eagles,
winning 4-1.
It was the first time Olympians
Fred Evans and Andrew Selby
had boxed in the capital since the
Olympics but the city will become
a home base with the Lionhearts
boxing at Bethnal Green's Yorl< Hall
for the remainder of the season.
First fixture there is on January 17.
At Earl's Court both Evans and
Selby secured their second WSB
victories, all bouts contested
without headguards or vests over
five rounds on a 10-points must
scoring system. Olympic silver
medallist Evans competes here at 73
kgs but it took him a while to assert
himself against Ujaceslav Kerber
of the German side.

CUBA'S national championships,
the Playa GIron, concluded on
December 23 and revealed, once
again the phenomenal talent on
the Island. Super-heavyweight
Erislandy Savon pushed Olympic
gold medallist Anthony Joshua
so close at London 2012, yet
