GEORGE GROVES will face
American veteran Glen Johnson at
London's ExCel Arena on December
15 after the 43-year-old reversed
his decision to retire.
It's a step up in class for the
15-0 Londoner, who hopes
to put an injury-plagued year
behind him against a man Groves
acknowledges, "has been in against
world class opposition and fought
consistently at that level."
Johnson has boxed 70
professional contests, Ws record
stands at 51-17-2. Discussing
"The Road Warrior", Groves said,
"It's going to be a challenge. It's a
tough fight for me and a step in
the right direction. It's against a
name people can associate with
and someone people have seen box
before. And the bonus is it's on a
big show in London."
The 24-year-old Commonwealth
champion is predicting a hard
night's work though. "He's a very
good fighter, and a fighter who has
the style to make you work hard for
12 rounds."
Groves' trainer Adam Booth
agreed. "He's used to every style
and he's seen everything and
effectively done everything. It's got
to be a craftsmanlike performance
when George fights Johnson."
Groves was scheduled to fight
Robert Stieglitz for the WBO
title in May but injury forced his
withdrawal. However, he doesn't
feel it will be long before he gets
to the top,-
"The next 12-18 months I'll be
ready for the world title and I'll
take it," he said.
On the same bill, Scotland's
WBO lightweight champion Riclcy
Burns will defend his title against
Liam Walsh
Walsh is 13-0 (10) and ranked
number 13 by the WBO, after he
won the vacant WBO European
lightweight title against Domenico
Urbano in July.
"The odds are massively stacked
against me but I wouldn't have
taken the fight if I thought I might
lose," said the Cromer man,
"In an ideal world i would
have liked to be 20-0, had a few
12-rounders under my belt but
that's life,
"In all honesty it probably is
too soon but I'll give it everything
I've got, I can assure you of that,
It's a win-win situation for me,
I've got things that can cause him
problems."
BRIAN MACEE is preparing for the
toughest test of his 41-fight career
when he challenges Mikkel Kessler in
Dennnark this December.
The winner will wear the WBA supermiddleweight
belt and it's a fight that the
37-year-old is "confident of winning."
"I have no fear of going over there,"
Magsa stated, "Kessler ha^ been beaten
before and he can be beaten again. •
The super-middleweight
division is so competitive
that everyone can beat
anyone on their day."
The 36-4-1 (25) Magee
is no stranger to being the
away fighter, having fought
in his homeland just twice
in the past five years.
KATIE TAYLOR, now an Olympic
and four-time World champion,
has announced that she has
turned down offers from
professional boxing
and will stay in the
amateurs.
"The thing
with professional
boxing is you have
to have the right
promoter and the
right fights. It is a
cut throat business.
You have to make sure you
have the right people around you to
get the right fights and you're not
guaranteed to get the best fights,"
she said.
"With amateur boxing, you're just
entered into a competition and to be
the best you've got to beat the best.
You're not waiting around to get
these fights organised.
"As an amateur [in a tournament]
you might be fighting five or six
times in a week and you
have to make the weight
all week. It's grueling
on the body. So to
j«in an amateur
world title is a lot
harder than to win a
pro world title.
"For me there is
nothing better than
boxing for my country
and bringing home medals
for my country."
Simon & Schuster will be
publishing Taylor's book. My Olympic
Dream.

proved enough.
