AS we were going to press, Frank
Maloney's Brentwood Leisure
Centre show toniglit (Friday,
September 11} was hit by a number
of changes. First a back problem
put paid to former British
champion Andy Bell's comeback
against unbeaten Cheshunt man
ASHLEY SEXTON. Bell has a
problem with his lower spine,
causing him pain all the way down
his leg when he twists.
The Sexton fight was to be for
the vacant English title and a
British eliminator, but now "Flash
Ash" must keep his focus for his
first 10-round contest with shortnotice
foe, Brazilian DARLI PIRES,
17-7.1 (8).
Meanwhile, English light-middle
boss Andrew Facey has pulled out
of a defence against former victim
GARY WOOLCOMBE with a back
injury sustained in sparring this
week; the Welling man now meets
former European title challenger
ROMAN DZUMAN of Ukraine over
eight rounds.
Finally, MARTIN POWER'S British
bantam eliminator with Matthew
Edmonds fell through when the
latter pulled out after a spell of flu
wrecked his preparations. Power
now meets unbeaten Darlington
prospect STUEY HALL over eight.
Fingers crossed that headliners
TYSON FURY and JOHN
MCDERMOTT make it to the
venue unscathed.
ACCORDING to media reports, JOE
CALZAGHE could see just a little
more than £20,000 of the £1.9m
court judgment he won in the legal
battle between him and his former
employers, Sports Network.
Recent estimates show that
promoter Frank Warren's former
company, which went into
administration earlier this year with
debts of £5.6m, will have £53,652
made available to unsecured
creditors, who are due £5m of
what is owed (Calzaghe is one of
them. Warren is another).
"They're speculating," said
Warren of the reports. "The
company [Sports Network] owes
me well over a million pounds."
ABERDEEN'S LEE McAUISTER
(below) makes the first defence of
his Commonweatth lightweight title
against fellow-Scot PAUL
"CHARUE" KING on October 17
at the Beach Ballroom In his
hometown.
Promoter Tommy Gilmour goes
without TV for a good-looking fight
between two 26-year-olds with
ambition.
Chief support sees unbeaten
Glaswegian DAVEY SAVAGE JNR
face off with local man JAMES
ANCLIFF for the vacant Scottish
super-bantamweight title.
WELSH super-heavyweight Andrew
Jones met Cuba's Erislandy Cotilla
Savon, nephew of three-times.
Olympic gold medallist Felix Savon, in
the first series.
Savon came out looking very fit
and slim for a 91 & kgs boxer,
throwing shots from every angle.
Within 30 seconds Andrew was in
trouble and the referee gave him a
standing eight count.
The Cuban just did not let up
throwing combinations at will before
the referee again gave Andrew a count
of eight, rightly stopping the bout.
Look out for Savon - he could end up
with a medal of some sort.
Andrew Selby's opponent in the
bantamweight first series. Central
African Arthur Mbengua, failed to
show, giving Selby a walkover.
On Saturday September 5 Selby
met a very tough opponent in
Bulgaria's Detelin Dalakliev and went
down 3-0. Dalakliev lost to Luke
Campbell in last year's European
Championships final.
At featherweight Craig Evans had a
bye into the second round, where he
notched a 14-7 win over Mohamed
Eliwa from Egypt.
Wales send Lynsey Holdaway (51)
and Becky Price (64) to the European
Women's Championships in Ukraine
from September 14-21.
