AMERICAN Senator John McCain
and Republican Peter King are
hoping to persuade Barack Obama
to posthumously pardon former
heavyweight champion Jack Johnson.
The first black president of the
USA has been called upon to pardon
the first black heavyweight champion
and quash his 1913 conviction under
the Mann Act for having a consensual
relationship with a white woman
across state lines.
His arrest and subsequent
conviction came during an era
when America was searching for
a "Great White Hope" to dethrone
the flamboyant and controversial
champion.
"We need to erase this act of
racism," Senator McCain said.
"This resolution to pardon Jack
Johnson would not right this injustice,
but it would recognise it, and shed
light on the achievements of an athlete
who was forced into the shadows of
bigotry and prejudice."

OUVER McCALL, former WBC
heavyweight champion, tops a
Crown boxing bill in Las Vegas on
May 22 - with his son, unbeaten
EUJAH McCALL, also a heavyweight,
on the same card.
The show takes place at The
Orleans hotel. Oliver Dbe/ow] fights
Australian champ JOHN HOPOATE
for the IBA championship. Elijah, 2-
0, meets MICHAEL SCHULTZ.

CHRIS BLINKHORN, a 17-year-old
flyweight with the Withins School
Police Club in Bolton, is one to watch.
Tomorrow (Saturday April 11)
he begins his bid for the Junior ABAs
(Class 6), having lost narrowly in the
Class 5 final last year. This season has
already see Chris box for England and
tackle several quality opponents on
club shows.
Blinkhorn's fine season was brought
to our attention by his coach John Hart
in late February, after we published
Four Nations ratings.
Explained Hart, "Chris was looking at
your rankings [February 13] and saying,
'I've beaten him...' and 'I've boxed him...'
He wondered what he had to do to get
in them."
The answer is that Blinkhorn WAS
in our provisional lists, at light-flyweight
- the division in which he won for
England against Ireland in Dublin on
December 12.
