GOLDEN BOY'S April 4 lightweight
tournament has been hit by another
withdrawal.
Former champ Joel Casamayor
has pulled out because of a back
injury, so California's ROLANDO
REYES, 30-4-2 (19), steps in to
fight JULIO DIAZ.
Casamayor was hoping to bounce
back from his llth-round stoppage
defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez but
the Cuban veteran suffered a lumbar
spine sprain. It happened after Jorge
Barrios broke his jaw in training.
Barrios has been replaced for
the show at the Frank Erwin Center
in Austin, Texas, by VICENTE
ESCOBEDO - who meets CARLOS
HERNANDEZ.
The other fights see exciting
Aussie MICHAEL KATSIDIS go in
with JESUS CHAVEZ while
Venezuelan puncher EDWIN VALERO
meets ANTONIO PITALUA.

SIMON BLOCK, the Secretary of
the Commonwealth Council, is
moving to France but will carry
on with his work for the
Commonwealth Council.
He will operate from his
home in Normandy and wanted
to clarify that working from a
non-Commonwealth country would
not affect his position. "In this day
and age, with modern technology,
it is not an issue [where he works
from]," he said.
"We have had a board meeting,
they were pleased to keep me and
I was pleased to stay."

THE WBC No. 1 lightweight
contender URBANO ANTIUON,
25-0 (18), takes on TYRONE
HARRIS on Top Rank's Azteca
America show at the Hard Rock
Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on
May 1, the night before Ricky
Hatton meets Manny Pacquiao.
Former Contender star ALFONSO
GOMEZ is also on the seven-fight
bill, as well as undefeated
lightweight prospect DIEGO
MAGDALENO. Antillon began
sparring with Pacquiao this week.

THE Combined Services
Championships at Maida Gym,
Aldershot on March 18 produced an
absolute war at cruiserweight between
the Navy's Nick McGarry and
Lee John (Army).
Both are from Doncaster, which
perhaps explains why it was a battle
from the off
John was ahead after the first (of 3 x
3s) but McGarry's pressure gradually
drained his stamina and the soldier
took a count at the end of round two.
Early in the last) John came back but
with 2-19 on the clock referee Dale
Randle called "Stop". McGarry dropped
his hands, looked at the r e f - and John
poleaxed him.
Randle started to count then stopped
to bring the doctor in as Nick was badly
hurt (stayed down two minutes). The
third man consulted ringside officials
and disqualified John, who trailed by
four points on the scoring computer at
the time of the ending.
At light-welter Steve Turner (Army)
beat the Navy's Mark Flowers 7-2.
Turner won, but the score was a joke
- this would have been a classic 59-58
on the old pen-and-paper system.
Turner nicked the first but Flowers
took an excellent second, hooking the
body with both hands. In the last the
long-limbed soldier got back to what he
does best, potshotting from the outside.
Last year's ABA heavyweight finalist
Joe Harvey (Royal Navy), now up to
91 & kgs, beat hulking Fijian Wilden
Robanakadavu (Army) on a retirement
in round two.

THE Scottish Senior finals are
tonight (Friday March 27) at
Lasswade, Midlothian and It's
difficult to see anybody beating
STEVE SIMMONS at heavy or
CALLUM JOHNSON at light-heavy.
Simmons faces Hawick's SEAN
ALLISON, who has never confronted
anyone with the Leith Victoria
man's pedigree. Said Steve, "I
never disrespect opponents but I
should win this one okay."
Granite City's EMMANUEL
AHONSO has been a surprise
package in this year's event but I
can't see him beating Newarthill's
Johnson, who looks invincible on
current form.
Middleweight looks anybody's
title given that DARREN REID
(Alloa) and CHRIS COWAN
(Lochend) were both dark horse
winners in the semis. Reid has
more experience than his Edinburgh
rival, but then so did Cowan's
semis victim Philip Warner.
Welter promises to be one of the
bouts of the night, pitting Stirling's
fearless buzz bomb GEORGE
THOMSON against slick-boxing
SEAN FINNEY of Kingdom,
Kirkcaldy. This is a classic bull v
matador confrontation and
although Finney Is the purists'
favourite, don't write off Thomson.
At 64kgs Forgewood's STEVE
SHAROUDI, who was lightweight
champion last year, is favoured to
beat ROSS McMURDIE - but the
Newarthill boxer will do his
darnedest to disprove that theory.
GARETH STEMP of Edinburgh's
Holyrood club face a stiff test at
bantam from ANDREW CUTHBERT
(Granite City), who looked good
seeing off farmer Eastern champion
Dave Cowan in the semis.
The lightweight final looks
another cracker, featuring Cubantrained
stylist RYAN SMITH from
Renfrewshire versus exciting slugger
SEAN WATSON (Fauldhouse). A real
silk V rawhide affair, this.
At super-heavyweight I expect
Springhill's ROSS HENDERSON
to hit too hard for cagey Larkhall
survivor JAMES PERRY.
