IBF No.l contender ALEXANDER
POVETKIN has a new trainer,
outspoken American Teddy Atlas.
Tlie former trainer of Micliael
Moorer, Donny Lalonde and others
went to Russia for a week to see if
he could work with the Russian
heavyweight, scheduled to face
Wladimir Klitschko later this year.
Atlas, who has been working as
an analyst on ESPN, said Povetkin
will train in the US with him. He
trialled Povetkin for six days,
working on the technical nuances
of his game, reviewing fights and
looking at tapes of Wladimir,
communicating through an
interpreter. Povetkin also sparred
for Atlas, against former opponent
Larry Donald.
UNBEATEN heavyweights KEVIN
JOHNSON and ODLANIER SOUS,
the latter a former three-time
world amateur champion and
(2004) Olympic gold medallist, will
clash over 12 rounds at the Hard
Rock in Las Vegas on Top Rank's
August 15 pay-per-view card. It's
an excellent match.
Solis, 14-0 (101, has undoubted
ability but his fitness has looked
questionable since he turned pro.
Johnson, 22-0-1 (9), has stopped
his last three opponents, including
faded former world champion
Bruce Seldon and the previously
unbeaten Devin Vargas.
The show also features former
IBF flyweight king NONITO
DONAIRE, moving up to super-fly to
fight RAFAEL CONCEPCION for the
WBA interim belt, and WBO feather
boss STEVEN LUEVANO defending
against BERNABE CONCEPCION.
TVSON FURY'S next opponent looks
likely to be bigger than him!
Hennessy Sports are targeting 6ft
Sin, 20st German-based Russian
EVGENY ORLOV, 10-5-1 (7), for the
July 18 Bethnal Green show.
Orlov, "The Molecule from Hell",
has been stopped only once, in his
third fight, and fought in decent
company.
WALES travelled to Edinburgh for the
GB junior championships (June 12-13)
with a young, inexperienced team yet
won three gold and six bronze
medals.
Mitchell Buckland (St Joseph's,
Newport) stood out as one of the best
on show. In the semi-finals he took on
Charlie Flynn of Scotland, whom
Mitch had beaten in the recent Boys
Clubs. Scottish officials were very
confident, but Mitch produced a
vintage performance to win 9-1.
In the final Mitchell took on highly
touted and very tall Chris Smith of
England. It looked a hard bout for the
short and stocky St Joseph's boxer.
but Mitchell had discussed changing
tactics with national coach Tony
Williams and duly won 9-2.
After an even first Buckland edged
the second and in the third went all
out to clinch the verdict. This was
Mitch's second GB title.
' Surprise packet was Ben Crocker
of Premier Swansea. Only just drafted
into the Welsh squad system, Ben had
a very close semi-final with Scot
James Pritchard. But the likeable
Swansea boxer rose to the occasion
for a clear points victory, much to the
delight of coach Steve (Spud) Brophy.
Sam Dyer from Porthcawl and Pyle
repaid the faith shown in him by the
national coach when winning an
excellent final against Scottish
champion Lee Murray.
There was not much in the first two
rounds but Sam stepped up a gear in
the last to pull away for a comfortable
points victory.
Sam's great uncle is Eddie Dyer, an
AIBA referee and judge, as well has a
Welsh ABA director.
The team was led by manager John
Wheatley of Swansea. Head Coach
was Tony Williams, supported by
coaches Karl Jones of Fleur de Lys and
Spud Brophy of Premier.
Referee/judges were Tony Wynne,
Albert Masling and Bob McCoy.
