MIKKEL KESSLER'S new promoter
Sauerland Events won the bids for
the WBA super-middleweight
champ's mandatory defence against
Venezuela's GUSMYL PERDOMO and
will put the match on in either
Kerning, Denmark or Flensburg,
Germany, on September 12.
Kessier wants to get his
obligation out of the way before he
takes part in the Super Six tourney.
CARL FROCK'S first tournament
fight - against unbeaten ANDRE
DIRRELL - will take place on
October 17 in Nottingham. It is the
same night that ARTKUR ABRAKAM
takes on JERMAIN TAYLOR, possibly
in Berlin. Kessler's opening match,
against unbeaten American ANDRE
WARD, is set for November 21. All
six participants are pictured below,
in front of Berlin's Brandenburg
Gate.
Meanwhile, ESPN'S Dan Rafael
has suggested HBO have a supermiddleweight
tournament to rival
Showtime's, mentioning Librado
Andrade, IBF champ Lucian Bute,
middleweight ruler Kelly Pavlik,
Allan Green, Sakio Bika and WBO
titlist Karoly Balzsay.
The Bute-Andrade rematch is on
November 28 on HBO and Green
was upset not to make it into the
Showtime event.

BEIBUT SHUMENOV gets a 'world'
title shot after just eight pro fights
(all wins, six early), which, if he
wins, will put Amir Khan's
achievement last week into
perspective. The Las Vegas-based
Kazakh challenges Spanish
southpaw and WBA light-heavy
champion GABRIEL CAIVIPILLO on
August 15 in Kazakhstan.
Athens Olympian (2004)
Shumenov has superb form for a
pro novice - he's beaten Montell
Griffin, Epifanio Mendoza and
Byron Mitchell in his last three.

BEIJING Olympics silver medallist
Kenneth Egan is on track for a place
on Ireland's team for the Worlds in
Milan from September 1-12.
Winner of a record seven Irish lightheavy
titles after previously holding
two middle championships, Egan was
never in any trouble in the finals of the
Irish ABA'S Open Senior competition.
He scored a third-round win over
fellow-Dubliner Darren Cruise at the
National Stadium.
Cruise was trailing 6-1 after the
opening round and 15-1 after the
second before the Crumlin boxer's
corner wisely retired their man.
"I got him with some good body
shots," said Egan. "Everything is coming
together nicely now for the Worlds and
I'm happy with myself There's a multinations
coming up in France on August
18 and I'll be there."

VIC Christopher, the former Royal
Navy and Combined Services bantam
and feather champion in the 1970s,
received the MBE in the recent Queen's
Birthday Honours List.
Now a magistrate in Birmingham,
Vic (58) received his award for Services
provided to the Local Community.
Remembers BN contributor Malcolm
Meredith, "Vic was good enough to
defeat ReptofTs Moss O'Brien the same
year Moss won the ABA featherweight
title, 1978. A good fighter!"
Christopher won five Royal Navy
Open titles: at bantam in 1972 and
1973, then up at featherweight in 1974,
1975 and 1976.
