IBF featherweight champion
ROBERT GUERRERO has vacated
his title to move up to super-feather.
The Gilroy, California native, 22-1-1
1151, has been struggling to maite
weight for some time.
"The Ghost" [above] was in his
second reign as champion and, in
his last defence in February,
impressively stopped Jason Litzau.
He was hampered in the build-up
to his first defence against IMartin
Honorio last year when his wife,
Casey, was diagnosed with
leui«aemia. He turned his despair
into inspiration and halted Honorio
in the first round.
"1 can no longer maice featherweight
and feel strong," Guerrero
said. "I'm older now, my body has
matured, so it's time for me to
move up. The extra four pounds will
only make me stronger.
"I want to challenge all the big
names, guys like Manny Pacquiao
and Juan Manuel Marquez."
The vacant IBF feather belt will
likely be disputed by their No. 2
(No. 1 is vacant) and former
champion Orlando Salido, who beat
Guerrero in 2006 but was then
stripped for taking nandroione and
the result was changed to a no
contest, and No. 3 (and 160 holder)
Cristobal Cruz. Both are Mexicans.
BEN EDWARDS, a lieavyweight wiio
won liis only professional fight
witliin 92 seconds, has been
sentenced to nine months' periodic
detention for an assault on a
bouncer In the Australian capital,
Canberra.
Edwards, 24, a former champion
kickboxer, was found guilty of
recklessly inflicting grievous bodily
harm on a 29-year-old doorman at
an Irish pub in January. The court
had heard the victim had left the
pub to talk to Edwards, but was
knocked out with a single punch.
He was left with permanent
deafness in his right ear and had
part of his skull removed.
Edwards made his professional
debut last year, knocking out
former rugby league star John
Hopoate at 1-28 of the first round
after Hopoate had been decked
twice. Edwards has not fought
since. Edwards' lawyers said there
would be an appeal.
FORMER Swedish middleweight
FREDERIK ALVAREZ has lost his
case against Swedish medical
authorities.
Alvarez had sued for damages
for malpractice. After a fight in
1999 the fighter slipped with a
bottle in his hand and was badly
cut. The wound healed but the pain
remained although Fredrik fought
on and it wasn't until later it was
discovered that there was a piece
of glass left in the hand.
Alvarez, 40-5 (26), and his
lawyer claimed the damage the
piece of glass had done had ruined
his career. The medical authorities
have paid some compensation
already and acknowledged the
mistake made and that Alvarez
can't use the left hand properly.
But the court didn't see that the
injury had ended Fredrik's career.
The case may still be appealed.
ALTHOUGH Italy's world heavyweight
champion Primo Camera fought in

and tomorrow (Friday June 27/Sat 28)
hosts the British Youth Championships

The fakery of pro wrestling will be
replaced by outstanding talents such as
Glasgow light-flyweight Robert
" R o c k y " Wright, whose skills have
earned him rave notices at home and
abroad. Rocky wins Best Boxer Awards
the way Tom Hanks wins Best Actor
Oscars.
