THE superb WBA/IBF unification
match at welter between unbeaten
Puerto Rican destroyer MIGUEL
COTTO and superb Mexican
ANTONIO MARGARITO has been
made official.
The two will clash on a Top Rank
bill on July 26 at the MGM Grand in
Las Vegas, and the superfight will
be televised on pay-per-view by HBO.
This week, the fighters have
been on a tour to promote the
showdown and have visited Mexico
City, Los Angeles and New York.
Today (Friday May 23) they are in
San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Promoter Bob Arum told ESPN,
"I get really excited about a fight
like this because I know it can't be
anything but great. There won't be
any playing around."

JOEY DEJOHN, the former Syracuse
middleweight known as the "Golden
Boy" who fought from 1947-1955,
died on May 9, aged 81.
Joey was a popular and exciting
fighter. He had 90 fights, winning
74 (52 inside), losing 14 and
drawing two.
In May 1949 he lasted into the
eighth against Jake LaMotta, who
in his next fight - the following
month - won the world middleweight
title from Marcel Cerdan.

IT'S back to business in a big way
for Salford southpaw JAMIE
MOORE, who could have three
fights in four months.
Moore takes on decent Mexican
ESAU HERRERA in an eight-rounder
on the big Manchester bill tomorrow
night (May 24), then has a fight
lined up against Irish light-middle
champion CIARAN HEALY on July 5
at the National Basketball Arena
in Dublin.
That 10-rounder tops a Joe Egan
Promotions bill that also features
PATRICK and PAUL HYLAND plus
Prizefighter winner MARTIN ROGAN.
Moore, if he comes through both
fights unscathed, should then finally
face European champion ZAURBEK
BAYSANGUROV in September, but
the EBU are meeting about that
today (May 23).

WALES t o o k 10 boxers ranging
f r om 12-17 years old to t h e Pirkka
Cup multi-nations in Finland (May
2-5). They won seven gold and three
silver medals, which national coach
Tony Williams called "an excellent
performance".
Patrick Waite of Cwmbran boxed
well t o outpoint Ruslan Viktorov
(Fin) in the semis and then J o h n Lee
King of Repton (England) in final,
both unanimously.
Patrick also received t h e Best Boxer
Award for his age group.
