Tough sub for Yuri
YURI GAMBOA'S HBO debut,
scheduled for May 17 on Boxing
After Dark, has been hit by the
withdrawal of opponent Marcus
Ramirez, the WBO No. 2 at feather.
No reason was given for Ramirez
pulling out.
Arena, who co-promote the
Miami show with Gary Shaw found
a lively replacement, Dominican
DARLING JIMENEZ.
He's 23-2-2 (14) and unbeaten
in his last six - which includes a
stoppage of Mike Anchondo - with
those half-dozen victories coming
inside three.
MEXBOROUGH cruiserweight Scott
Brookes tragically died on Tuesday
(April 1) in Rotherham General
Hospital after being involved in a car
accident early that morning.
Brookes, 20, who was unbeaten in
four fights as a pro, was hit by a taxi.
Police are investigating.
IBF light-heavy champ Clinton
Woods has taken the news hard,
having tipped Brookes for the top.
His promoter at Fight Academy
Dennis Hobson said Brookes' death
was "a waste of talent" and "so sad".
"We just watched a tape of some
fights from the other day and he was
in the front row cheering his mate
on. It's an absolute travesty.
"He was a natural talent and we
expected good things from him as a
fighter. We did of both brothers and
our best wishes go out to all his
family."
Boxing News offers its deepest
sympathy to Scott's family, including
pro boxer Stuart.
JON THAXTON risks it all tonight
(Friday April 4) when he challenges
Yuri Romanov for the European lightweight
title at York Hall, Bethnal Green.
Thaxton's promoter Mick Hennessy,
who promotes this bill (live on Sky
Sports), is talking of a world title fight
for the Norwich man, a veteran at 33.
And it's well known how Hennessy
and Frank Warren have been butting
heads over a fight between British
champion Thaxton and
Commonwealth king Amir Khan, who
if not the best in the division - yet - is
the attraction who generates the most
money.
GEORGE GROVES made a confident
start to his ABA middleweight title
defence by winning the North West
London Divs at Brent Town Hall.
With three in at the weight, Groves
drew the bye into the final, where he
would meet either clubmate Lou Reid
or Angel southpaw John Ryder.
Their semi earlier in the evening was
well-contested and close, but Ryder's
greater flair, variety and speed earned
him the decision.
