ANTONIO TARVER, in London
to announce his IBF light-lieavyweight
title challenge to CLINTON
WOODS (see editor's column), has
tipped JOE CALZAGHE to defeat
BERNARD HOPKINS on April 19.
That's an interesting picl(
considering Hopitins floored and
outpointed Tarver.
Tarver didn't want to talk much
more about Calzaghe, but clearly
had the Welshman in his sights.
"Calzaghe's a great champion at
super-middleweight, but at lightheavy
he is in uncharted waters.
"I gave Hopkins all his credibility,
but he is old-man crafty. He can
take away a graceful fighter's
ability to do things well. But
Calzaghe's been more active and
that, for me, makes the difference."

THE British Board of Control has
fined Graham Earl £1,000 (plus £500
costs) for misconduct (a breach of
Section 25). The penalty is for withdrawing
from fighting British champ
Jon Thaxton last year - AFTER purse
bids had been processed. The case
had been adjourned since September.
Mark Thompson was fined for the
same reason, pulling out against
Sheffield's Kail Brook in a British
welter final eliminator, which Frank
Warren had scheduled for December
8 last year.
Thompson's manager Steve Wood
argued the date came too soon after
Mark's gruelling defeat by South
African Vincent Vuma. Wood will pay
Thompson's £500 fine and £500 costs.
Another penalty recipient is
promoter Frank Maloney, who
won the purse bids for the British
middleweight title match between
Howard Eastman and Wayne Elcock
but then had to give the fight up when
he could not guarantee Sky coverage.
Maloney will pay a £100 fine and
£500 costs.

FAULDHOUSE-BASED welterweight,
COLIN McNEIL - out through injury
for several months - will make his
comeback on the undercard of
McAllister-Gomez in Aberdeen [see
story on next page], McNeil's
manager Alex Morrison claimed.
And McNeil told me, "I would love
to have my comeback fight against
Gary Young. Sure, I knocked Gary
out inside a round at Meadowbank in
2006 but I'm now 35 and have been
out due to injury for a while. So Gary
will never get a better chance than
now to get revenge - the bout would
also be a natural for the fans.
"I hope that Gary and his
management team will consider
and accept my offer.
"It could even be billed as an
eliminator for the British title held
by the winner of Kevin Mclntyre v
Kevin Anderson, which goes ahead
later this month.
"Gary has been out through
injury, too, so it would also be
evens as far as ring rust goes."

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS staked his
claim for an Olympic qualification shot
when he won welterweight gold at the
Strandja multi-nations tournament in
Plovdiv, Bulgaria (Jan 31-Feb 3).
This prestigious tournament, in
its 59th year, attracted 99 boxers from
18 nations including Cuba, Russia,
Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
Great Britain entered six (three
returning from injury) to get some
quality competition in preparation for
the first European Olympic qualifier
at Pescara, Italy (Feb 24-March 2).
And it was a success with Saunders'
gold backed by four bronzes for Khalid
Yafai (51), Tom Stalker (57), James
DeGale (75) and Stephen Simmons
(91).
