PAULIE MAUGNAGGI was stripped
of the IBF light-welterweight title.
Neither he nor Ricky Hatton, who
box in Las Vegas on November 22,
would agree to defend against No.
1 challenger HERMAN NGOUDJO,
who had defeated Souleymane
MBaye in a final eliminator but was
prepared to step aside and let the
autumn showdown happen.
Now Ngoudjo, beaten by
Malignaggi, will face JUAN
URANGO, a former Hatton victim,
for the vacant belt with the IBF
setting a deadline of October 18
for terms to be agreed.
MEXICAN Nacho Beristain will train
Oscar De La Hoya for his December 6
fight vnth Manny Pacquiao at the
MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Beristain, of course, is very familiar
with the men in the opposite corner
(Pacquiao'and trainer Freddie Roach) as
twice he has prepared Juan Manuel
Marquez to come within a whisker of
defeating Pacquiao, so it seems a smart
choice.
Beristain, trainer of 16 Mexican
world champions, said the fight was
one that WBC lightweight champion
Pacquiao had "everything to lose and
nothing to gain," but went on to say
"Oscar is the bigger, stronger and
smarter fighter. I don't think Pacquiao
has a chance." '
De La- Hoya had been hopeful of
working again with Floyd Mayweather
Snr but the American's commitment to
Ricky Hatton, who boxes Paulie
Malignaggi on November 22, meant he
could not be in two places at once,
forcing De La Hoya to look elsewhere.
LLOYD HONEYGHAN, former world
welterweight champ, says
ANTHONY SIVIALL could be a great
fighter, but that he's going to be
found out like Amir Khan.
"His training isn't right," said
Honeyghan. "The kid's got fantastic
ability, punch and lateral
movement. But he doesn't have a
defence. He's more a Kirkland
Laing-type fighter. He won't know
what to do once he moves up a
level."
