FORMER 'world' champion SOMSAK
SITHCHATCHAWAL will take on
POONSAWAT KRATINGDAENGGYM
in a WBA super-bantamweight
elimination fight on March 31 in
Bangkok.
The all-Thai bout will take place
in the compound of the Sports
Authority of Thailand (SAT) and the
winner will be given an opportunity
to take on WBA champion
CELESTINO CABALLERO of Panama
as the mandatory challenger.
"We are looking for the best
one to fight Caballero by October,"
said Niwat Laosuwannawat, who
will promote the fight.
Niwat is Poonsawat's manager.
Somsak was knocked out by
Caballero in October 2006 In his
first defence of the same title.
CHORLEY welterweight Michael
Jennings, who stopped Ross Minter
in February, is hoping for a WHO title
shot later this year.
WBU ruler Jennings, who has an
international 10-rounder (probably
against Frenchman Frank Harroche
Horta) on the April 5 Bohon bill, is
currently ranked No. 3 by the WHO.
However, the two boxers ranked
above him are Antonio Margarito (1),
who fights IBF champ Kermit Cintron
on April 12, and Shane Mosley (2),
who takes on Zab Judah on May 31.
For the moment Jennings is just
happy to be fighting regularly.
"It'd be handy if it carried on like
that for the rest of the year," he said.
"1 feel really sharp. [WBO title-holder]
Carlos Quintana is a league above the
guys I've faced, but they're all
beatable, aren't they?"
ESHAM PICKERING, last seen
calling out new European champ
RENDALL MUNROE, must first
defend his British belt against West
Ham's MAHHEW MARSH. That
goes on at York Hall on June 27,
promoted by Hennessy Sports.
Purse bids for Munroe's
mandatory against Frenchman
SALEM BOUAITA are expected by
April 7.
The promoter also has
JONATHAN THAXTON, currently in
training for Yuri Romanov on April
4, defending the British belt
against former victim LEE MEAGER
at York Hall on July 25. Thaxton-
Romanov is at the same venue.
IRELAND won t w o golds in the
Zlatko Hrbic senior multi-nations
tournament in Zagreb, Croatia.
In t h e finals, St Michael's Athy

Russia's Maxim I n a t e v 34-29 and
Paulstown Kilkenny middleweight
D a r r e n O'Neill moved up to lightheavy

Krause 20-12.
It wras their third w i n in as
many days, with Dublin coaches
Tony Davitt (Drimnagh) and Jim
Halpin (St Saviours) full of praise
for b o t h boxers, describing their
victories as "magnificent".
Donovan is a former Irish b a n t am
and feather champion, while O'Neill
was a finalist in t h e Irish Seniors in
January.
Flyweight Paddy Barnes (Holy
Family Belfast) and b a n t am John Joe
Nevin (Cavan) have already qualified
