FORMER WBA/WBC super-featherweight
champion Genaro Hernandez
has been diagnosed with a rare
cancer. His insurance does not cover
his treatment and the WBC has set
up a fund to help him meet the medical
bills.
Hernandez told Fightnews: "I
would like to say to everyone,
whether it be boxers, wrestlers,
MMA fighters, to be aware of any
little lump anywhere in your body
that doesn't seem to be normal
and all of a sudden appears.
"1 had a little lump appear under
the right side of my jaw, and not
even a week had passed when all of
a sudden three more lumps
appeared on my right side of the
neck. Please take the time and go
get a check-up if it ever appears.
You'll probably save your own life."
Donations can be sent to World
Boxing Cares, 36 West 22nd St,

FORMER South African super-bantamweight
champion Gaybon Yekiso
passed away recently in Dobsonville
near Johannesburg. The 52-year-old
Yekiso had been suffering from a
stomach complaint for some time.
The tall, gangling fighter made
his pro debut in 1977 and fought
10 South African champions in a
career that lasted until March
1987.
Yekiso won the Transvaal superbantam
title, as well as the South
African belt.
Possibly his best performance
was when he outpointed experienced
Jose Rufino Narvaez from
Argentina at the Orlando Stadium
in Soweto.
Yekiso finished with a record of
27-8-3 (12).

ISLINGTON club The Times
showed some excellent form on the
Tottenham & Enfield show at Lea
Valley High School in Enfield on
October 25.
Georgie Kean, last year's Golden
Belt winner, won a local derby with
Islington's Carlos Moreno in his first
senior bout. Kean, who forced a count
in the last, took home the Boxer of the
Night trophy.
Another Times boy, Antony
Procommenos, outpointed
Cheshunt's Dave Leo in a good scrap,
having twice lost closely to the same
man last season.
The North London club's Keith
Dyer enjoyed a points triumph over
Bexley's Danny Maguire, who took a
count in the final round.
