ACELINO FREITAS' retirement could
be one of the shortest in history.
This week he said he'd come
back for a rematch with Cuban
JOEL CASAMAYOR, who recently
captured the WBC lightweight
title from Diego Corrales.
Freitas (above) beat Casamayor
controversially on points in a
super-featherweight unification
bout in 2002, but was subsequently
stopped by Corrales, his only loss.
Where all this leaves Graham
Earl, who was going to fight
Michael Katsidis of Australia
for the WBO lightweight title
Freitas gave up, is anyone's guess.
Certainly, the WBO will allow
Freitas to continue as their
champion if he does return.

LENNOX LEWIS (pictured below)
thinks Superfighter, the new concept
for world-ranked fighters to all meet
in one day, is a great idea.
He said last week: "I really like it.
I was thinking if it were around 10
years ago when I was still fighting,
how great Superfighter would be.
The likes of me, Mike Tyson and
Evander Holyfield..."
The first Superfighter tournament
is on December 1 in Melbourne with
the heavyweights, but the bad news
is that top drawer Samuel Peter and
Calvin Brock have pulled out.
SINAN SAMIL SAM fills one of the
vacancies.
As a side attraction at the event,
there has been talk of ROY JONES
fighting PAUL BRIGGS over four
rounds to help stimulate interest in
future Superfighter shows at other
weights. Nothing has been signed,
but Briggs says he is very interested.
Jones says he will then box MANNY
SIACA at the Liacouras Center in
Philadelphia on December 9.

Cry baby goes pro!
RED-HOT London light-heavy TONY
SALEM has gone pro with Franit
Maloney.
Salem famously wore too much
bandage in the first ABAs of 2005
and was thrown out moments after
winning a bout.
He collapsed in tears - moving
everyone in the arena, including the
official who disqualified him, Ted
Goreham.
Salem is a likeable, honest guy
outside the ring but inside it all
business.
Nigerian-born and based in
North London, he boxed for
England against Cuba and is
very dangerous on the counter.
A southpaw, he destroyed virtually
everyone in his path on the way to
the ABA title in 2004. He went on
to win the Four Nations and we
likened him to a southpaw Roy
Jones.
He taps his ankles during rounds
the way Jones did.
He will debut next month.
Maloney will promote him and
James Oyebola manage him.

COMBINED Services Champs
are at HMS Nelson Barracks in
Portsmouth on Thursday (Nov 2),
when the RAF have no entries
because Tony Carroll (64) can't
get off active service.
Hosts Royal Navy enter GARETH
SMITH (51, unless he can get down
to 48, where he would box KEITH
SPONG); ALEX URRUTIA (60), a
light-welter to be named, DAVE
ROBINSON (69), STEVE TIGHE (75),
SHAUN MCDONALD (86 - he failed
his PTI course because of shin
splints and doesn't go back on
the course again until December),
STUART O'CONNOR (91) and SAM
SMITH (91&).
