LAWRENCE IVIURPHY'S defeat by
Wayne Eicocit in last weeiiend's
British eliminator in Birmingham
has convinced Uddingston's former
WBU middleweight champion to
hang up his gloves.
Murphy was decked twice in the
fifth before being rescued.
He had knocked out Elcock
inside a round in November 2003
to win the WBU belt before being
dethroned by Anthony Farneli in his
first defence four months later.
The 30-year-old said: "I'm on the
slide and H's time to get out. I'm
too proud to be a journeyman.
"IVIy timing was off and everything
he threw hurt. I've always had
great punch resistance but I felt
my legs go when I was caught by
a jab.
"Everything that could go wrong
did, but I don't want to detract
from Wayne's performance. He did
a number on me and I wish him all
the best.
"I can always say I won the WBU
title, though I know I could have
achieved more."
He added: "Still, there's more to
life than boxing. I've got a sevenweek-
old son called Cian who I
haven't seen enough of and it's
time to get my priorities right."
