EVANDER HOLYFIELD still thinks
he can become undisputed world
heavyweight champion.
The faded 43-year-old returns in a
10-rounder at the American Airlines
Center in Dallas on August 19
against Jeremy Bates.
No, that isn't the former British
tennis player, but a 32-year-old sixfooter
from Kentucky who goes by
the nickname of "The Beast" yet has
lost 11 of 33 fights (one draw).
Holyfield, having his first fight in 21
months and without a win in three,
insists he is completely healthy for the
first time in years. We have heard that
before.
Still, he shouldn't have trouble with
Bates, who was stopped in two rounds
by Ray Austin in April.
HENRY CASTLE, having issued
an open challenge to the top British
fighters at his weight, has had his wish
granted.
He gets a fight!
The former ABA featherweight king
hasn't boxed since losing a December
six-rounder to Gareth Couch in one of
the small-hall fights of 2005 and said
last week: "I'm really frustrated. I just
want to fight. I'd love Kevin Mitchell. I'd
fight any of the top 10 super-feathers."
His trainer Ronnie Davies said: "Many
thought he beat Couch. Henry's quite
capable of being British champion at
least. He just needs a chance. That's all
he's asking for."
Castle duly boxes Ryan Barrett on a
WSO show at the Goresbrook Leisure
Centre in Dagenham on July 23 when
Shanee Martin steps up to the plate
against Cathy "The Bitch" Brown
in an intriguing main event.
GEORGE GROVES won middleweight
gold for England at the European Union
Junior (under-19) Championships in
Rome from June 6-11.
Anthony Agogo (silver at welter)
and Obed Mbwakongo (bronze at
light-heavy) also won medals for
England, while Ireland's Ryan
Lindberg beat Luke Campbell
(England) on the way to silver at
bantam.
Earning bronzes for Ireland were
John Murray (feather) and John Joe
Joyce (light).
England's coaches were Jim
Davison and Nick Griffm, with the
latter supplying the following report.
Team manager was Peter Hayes, with
Kendal's Alvin Finch the referee/judge;
he worked the blue riband super-heavy
final.
