JOHNNY WHEELER, one of
Australia's most respected ring
officials, died on November 10
after a short illness. He was 75.
Wheeler, a leading referee for
many years, worked as a judge
until three months ago.
A ref for more than 30 years,
he handled several IBF world title
fights, including the all-Australian
super-feather clash between Barry
Michael and Lester Ellis in 1985
and Jeff Fenech-Steve McCrory
for the bantamweight title the
following year.
Handling those fights was
appropriate, because Johnny
was a little-big man himself -
a pro feather-cum-lightweight
who compiled a 46-18-2 record
between 1948 and 1957. He lived
in Melbourne most of his life.
WINSOR DOBBIN
NEW European super-bantamweight
champion Bernard Dunne will not
be chasing 'world' titles until 2008
- even though he holds a win over
new IBF king Steve Molitor.
The Dubliner's manager-promoter
Brian Peters said Dunne had enough
good Europeans to feed on - such as
Spaniards Kiko Martinez and Miguel
Mallon - to keep him busy for 12
months.
CHELMSFORD was the venue for
the Central Area East versus London
quarter-final of the NACYP Champs
on November 11.
It was a good day for Kettering
School of Boxing, whose star Michael
Maguire beat Luke Gibb (Earlsfield)
in two rounds.
Hoddesdon hotshot Billy Joe
Saunders was left without a bout
following the withdrawal of Franco
Buglione.
