FOLLOWING Manny Pacquiao's big
win over Erik Morales in Las Vegas
last weekend, Marco Antonio
Barrera has agreed to challenge
Jesus Chavez for the IBF lightweight
title on March 25.
Barrera had held back on signing for
the fight in case there was a chance of
a rematch with Pacquiao.
But with Pacquiao seeing the date
as too soon, Barrera will now aim for a
history-making 'world' title in a fourth
division, a feat no Mexican has achieved.
The match and Chavez's first defence
since winning the belt from ill-fated
Leavander Johnson will take place at
the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with
Jorge Barrios defending his WBO
super-featherweight belt against
Hungary's Janos Nagy on the
same card.
Unifinished business
TAKE TWO: Exciting TONY DOHERTY
meets ERNIE SMITH again on Frank
Warren's Nottingham bill tomorrow
(Jan 28) hoping he can complete
the job this time.
A bomb scare in Bolton last July
forced them to call it quits in the
second round.
The fight, scheduled for four,
was declared a No
Contest.
Doherty
(right) had
previously ,
beaten " A * ® * '*
Smith in
2004 (pts 6) ^^
and is using this
as a warm-up for
another showdown with fellow-
Welshman Taz Jones in Newport in
March.
Tony won the Celtic welterweight
title against Jones in Cardiff last
September on a close 10-round
decision that was booed by the
large crowd there to watch Joe
Calzaghe and Amir Khan.
JAPAN'S WBC bantamweight champ
Hozumi Hasegawa will risk his belt
against former holder Veeraphol
Naldionluang-Promotion in a grudge
match in Kobe, Japan on March 25.
Diego Morales was supposed to
come next but recently withdrew as
mandatory contender because he could
no longer make 8st 6lbs.
Genaro Garcia, the WBC No. 2, was
then mentioned, but Veeraphol's party
insisted they come first.
Hasegawa decided to end all argument
by facing Veeraphol next in his new
mandatory.
