FORMER WBO Intercontinental
middleweight champion Willie
"Mighty" Quinn is now working on
the North Sea oilrigs but was ringside
for the Glenrothes ABC show in the
town's CISWO Club on November 19.
He was there to watch Eastern
District middleweight champion
Jonathan "Joe-Joe" Lee (Madison),
whose 4 X 2s with Dunfermline's
smooth boxing Brett Sharp shared
top billing.
This had exciting toe-to-toe
exchanges, smart moves and explosive
punching. And while Lee deserved his
win, it was closer than the 15-8 score
suggests.
FOR the first time since the Christies
in the early 1980s, three brothers
competed in national championships
when another Dublin family, the Uptons
from Westside BC, boxed in the Irish
Under-21s at the National Stadium.
But as happened when any of the
Christies were drawn against each
other. Sonny Upton conceded a
walkover to his brother James in the
featherweight final - after their father
Tony tossed a coin, and the younger
brother lost.
IRELAND'S Katie Taylor brilliantly
won the lightweight gold medal at the
Women's World Championships held in
New Delhi, India f r om November 18-23.
With 18 entries, Taylor had to box
five times for gold, winning three inside
the distance.
Her results - first series; Carrie
Barry (USA) w rsco; second series:
Eva Wahlstroem (Fin) w rsco 2;
quarter-finals: Fiorina Popa (Rom)
w rsco 2; semi-final: Tatyana Chalaya
(Rus) w pts 23-6; final: Anabella Farias
(Arg) w p t s 31-14.
