GARY LOCKEH looks like a
work in transition under
new trainer Brian Hughes,
and it's difficult to know
how his career may work out
from here on.
The Cwmbran middleweight did what he
had to do as he avenged the only defeat on
his record, outpointing Yuri T s a r e n k o of
Belarus over 10 thoughtful rounds at the
Kingsway Leisure Centre.
Lockett had lost in a 12-rounder to
Tsarenko a little more than 12 months ago at
the light-middleweight limit.
BRADLEY PRYCE produced the best
performance of his career to win a wide
10-round decision over the unbeaten but
woefully disappointing Russian IVAN KIRPA
on the Widnes bill.
Referee Dave Parris awarded the Welshman a
99-93 verdict, which was fair.
Kirpa had won 18 in a row before this, but
while he looked dangerous with right-hand
counters over the jab, he seemed to drift around
the ring for round after round without any attempt
to vary his tactics.
Pryce, in what on paper was a tough job,
learned fairly quickly to anticipate what the
Russian was doing and kept his concentration far
better than in the past.
He got the jab working, rode the occasional
rough patches without panicking or losing his
game plan, and used what he has - decent allround
boxing skills - to pile up the points.
Pryce was coming off that eighth-round
stoppage defeat by British welterweight champion
Nell Sinclair in Belfast in February and needed a
confidence boost.
STEPHEN SMITH of Liverpool's
Rotunda club lived up to his
"Swifty" nickname with two
quick wins at York Hall.
in the first bout of a marathon day (six
hours continuous boxing), Smith stopped
Fisher's Michael Casey in the opening round.
He came back five hours later and did the
same to Canvey's Shay Joyce, booking
himself a place in the Bridlington finals on
May 24.
Stephen spent part of the time between
bouts sitting at ringside in a T-shirt dedicated
to "Albo", or Jimmy Albertina, his coach who
tragically died earlier in the week (see
obituary elsewhere on this page).
Smith's bout against Casey, at Class 6 54
kgs, requires some explanation. It was
actually a North West Counties versus London
quarter-final, held over from Liverpool on April
26.
