Lewis-Tyson
speculation
TALK this week - and I stress it Is
only talk - Is that LENNOX LEWIS
and IMIKE TYSON will box on the
same show on June 21, but not against
each other.
The reasoning Is to promote a second
fight between the pair. An Immediate
rematch, given the way Lewis soundly
thrashed Tyson last June, is seen by the
powers that be as making little sense.
Named as possible Lewis challengers
are VITALI KLITSCHKO, KIRK JOHNSON
and JOE MESI. Tyson could box OLEG
MASKAEV or RAY MERCER. The show
could take place either in Las Vegas or
Buffalo, New York, Mesi's hometown.
ONE Of the last gold Lonsdale Belts Is
going up for sale.
It was purchased by a local businessman
nearly three years ago for £28,000.
The nine-carat gold Belt, probably about
100 years old, belonged to Randy Turpin,
who won it outright at light-heavy and is
pictured with it here.
The present owner is a huge Turpin fan,
but Adrian Bush, who helped organise a
fund to finance a statue of the former world
middleweight champ in Leamington, said:
"He just doesn't want it any more. It's
either under his bed or in the bank. He's
scared to take it out."
But in the right hands, the Belt is
extremely valuable and a rare piece of
boxing memorabilia.
If no buyers are forthcoming, the Belt
will probably go up for auction. Sotheby's
have shown an interest.
If anyone has any interest in making an
offer, they can do so by contacting me and I
will put them in touch with Adrian.
THE ABA finals return to London
for the first time in 11 years
when they're held at York Hall
in Bethnal Green tonight (Friday
April 4, sponsored by London's Evening
Standard, doors open 6pm, first bell 7).
So it's appropriate the star of the show could
be a Londoner, 18-year-old West Ham featherweight
Kevin Mitchell.
Exciting Mitchell will have plenty of support -
assuming his large following have got hold of
tickets. The show was sold out immediately after
the semi-finals two weekends ago.
(There is talk of the larger - and much more
prestigious - Albert Hall being used next year).
Kevin starts favourite after a string of quality
wins, most notably a 21 -11 victory over reigning
champion David Mulholland in the quarter-finals.
Out to upset the odds is Thame's Gareth
Couch, whose record suggests he should not be
written off.
