• LAST Sunday's Tooting, south London show was
cancelled when the bill collapsed.
A disappointed promoter Eugene Maloney
pulled it because there were only three tights left
and he didn't want to let down his regular punters.
"I've built up a good following, including a good
crowd from the City [of London], and they must
come first," he said.
"It's cost me more than three grand to cancel,
because I've still got to pay for the venue and
things like that. But I've got my reputation to
uphold as a man who puts on value-for-money
shows."
Anyone who had tickets tor Tooting will get a
discount at Maloney's next show, on November 18
at York Hall in Bethnal Green, when he promises a
bumper night of 10 fights.
THE continued beating
of the drum by fans
for Ricky Hatton to
face Junior Witter is
infuriating promoter
Frank Warren.
"Let me explain the situation
so everyone understands," he
said. "Jay Larkin of Showtime
has said publicly that Witter has
boxed twice on US TV and each
time failed to appeal to them.
And in order to make Hatton -
Witter, I need US TV."
The criticism of Warren in
this instance stems from him
having said on Sky TV - following
one of Ricky's fights - that
the match was signed as part
of Hatton's contract.
Warren insists he hasn't
given up on trying to make the
fight. He said he is close to
reaching agreement for Witter
to box Kelson Pinto, the hardhitting,
tall Brazilian promoted
by Oscar De La Hoya, in Britain.
"If he [Witter] beats Pinto,
then I think I can force the
Hatton fight on to US TV," said
Frank.
• PAT FURMEDGE, a BN reader
since he was a kid, was looking
forward to collecting a packet
when he bet on both Chi and Julio
Gonzalez to win last Saturday night.
He watched Chi decision Brodie
on Sky TV and was deliriously
happy when he read on the
internet that Gonzalez had beaten
Michalczewski, too.
So you can imagine his reaction
when he arrived at his local bookies
in Southampton on Monday morning
to be told Brodie-Chi had been
changed to a draw.
He rang us to confirm that. He
couldn't believe it.
