ITALIAN boxing writer Mario Mattioli was in
Rotterdam for the European football Championships
final when he said he saw stadium security insulting
a group of wheelchair-bound Italy fans.
When Mattioli and a few other reporters tried to
cover the story, he said they were roughed up by
Dutch police and thrown in jail. Mattioli was
released in the middle of the night, suffering a mild
concussion and dislocated shoulder.
The Italian govemment has filed a formal
complaint to Dutch police.

FOR three weeks Manchester
southpaw Glenn Williams
has been sparring (Linton
Woods, whose WBC light-heavy
title final eliminator against
Michael Nunn at London Arena
was cancelled on Wednesday
(see page 8). Woods now boxes
Greg Scott-Briggs.
'Clinfs In great shape, no
liberty-taker and a real gent,"
said Glenn. "Win or lose, he'll
always be champ. I'd like to say
thanks to all the lads at the gym,
who were all warm and friendly,
and to Howard and Loma
Rainey, who looked after me.
"Hard luck Wayne Rigby
[against Michael Ayers] in the
fight of the year. Wayne's the
most dedicated fighter of all. Be
patient and you'll get there in
the end, my friend."

WOLVERHAMPTON warhorse Nigel Rafferty,
32, a pro since January 1992, will reach the
100-fight mark on November 6.
The match is scheduled for his hometown,
at the excellent Civic Hall, with Stourbridge
southpaw Rob Norton possibly topping the
bill.
