• THE undercard, headed by MICHAEL
BOWEN'S predictably one-sided fourth
round win over ROBERT PEEL, was disappointing,
the winners not too difficult to pick, writes
Claude Abrams.
Pee! (12st 121bs) is tough, always prepared to
take a few to land his own, but generally out of
his depth against younger, faster prospects like
Bowen, who was too shetrp and accurate, knocking
the Welshman over with a right to the body
in the first of the scheduled eight-rounder.
Peel took a count of eight on one knee - and a
right hook while he was down - but survived
until the end of the fourth because Bowen (12st
71bs) chose to box, often with his hands too low,
and pick his shots instead of press his advantage.
For someone so tall, Bowen, 10-0 (J), did his
best work at close range, particularly with the
right uppercut, but he could not floor Peel agcun.
The Llandovery man pulled out during the interval
cleuming a damaged neck and referee Dave
Parris accepted his retirement.

FOREST HILL prospect
SPENCER FEARON (11st 4Ibs)
was made to work hard before
eventually getting on top of KASI
KAIHAU (11st) and knocking him
out in the fifth of a scheduled sixrounder
writes DANIEL HERBERT.
Fearon, now 6-0 (2), forced the
pace behind his left jab, but the
experienced Kaihau tucked up well
and took a lot of shots on his
gloves and arms to frustrate the
South Londoner.
But near the end of the fourth
Fearon's efforts paid off when a
right to the side of the head made
Kaihau go down on one knee,
although the Yorkshireman was
spared when the bell went at the
end of referee Dave Parris' compulsory
eight count.
Spencer had made the breakthrough,
however, and the fifth
was all one-way as he landed a
good left-right combination before
a solid left hook put Kaihau down
on one knee again. This time the
Doncaster man seemed to have lost
all resistance as he was counted
out in the act of rising at 1-25 of the
round.

• AN impressive winner was
Manchester featherweight
MICHAEL GOMEZ (9st 21bs), but
Bournemouth southpaw DAVID
JEFFREYS (8st 13 l/2lbs) was no
test in their scheduled six-rounder.
Gomez slipped inside his opponent's
jab and hooked hau-d to head
and body. As Jeffreys, with his
hemds too low, tried to move to his
right, a big left hook to the chin
sent him down heavily for four.
Referee Ken Curtis allowed David
to continue after counting to eight,
but he could easily have stopped
the contest.
A series of hooks preceded a
short left uppercut which sent Jeffreys
down on his back and the referee
signalled the end immediately
with 64 seconds gone.
