BERNARD HOPKINS, shoved out of the ring during his IBF middleweight
title defence against Robbie Allen in Las Vegas last month, suffered torn
ligaments in his ankle, which was not broken as some reports suggested.
The damage was serious enough to prevent the American fighting again
next month, though the IBF have not ruled if there will be a rematch.
Hopkins was stretchered from the ring cmd replays proved Allen, who had
the champion in a headlock, contributed to his fall as well as referee Mills
Lane, who took much of the blame.
MIKE TYSON, never far from trouble it seems, has denied assaulting
anyone at the scene of a trafflc accident. If he is innocent, the
incident should have little significance as to whether he is permitted to
l>ox again, though a preliminary hearing has been set for October 2.
The former world heavyweight champion is stiii expected to apply to
regain his licence to box on Septeml>er 19, despite being charged following
an incident on September 3 involving Richard Hardick, a 50-
year-old, who claims he was kicked by the flghter after his car smashed
into the back of Tyson's Mercedes convertible.
Hardick also claims Tyson punched another driver, but the boxer
issued a statement saying: "I did not kick anyone. My wife and I were
the victims of a traffic accident. I'm distressed by these false
allegations. I did not touch anyone."
Tyson's wife Monica Turner, a doctor, stood by her husband. "Mike
did not kick or punch emyone," she said.
If convicted, Tyson faces 10 years in jail or a $2,500 fine. Tyson, who
is still on parole for a prior rape conviction, will have the incident
reviewed by Indianapolis Superior Court officials.
It does appear suspicious, however, that the only reported injured
party is Tyson, yet he is the one being charged.
PUERTO RICAN puncher Felix Trinidad is being lined up to defend his
IBF welterweight title against Pernell Whitaker on December 12
- providing Trinidad can free himself from his contract with promoter Don
King and Whitaker is cleared to box after his drug suspension.
