KEN NORTON'S son's attempt
to try and follow in his father's
footsteps by entering the regional
Golden Gloves tournament at the Fair
Park Coliseum in Dallas was knocked
back by the US Amateur Boxing Federation.
Having already established himself
as a professional linebacker for the
Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco
49ers, Norton Jnr was prohibited
from entering the amateur tournament.
Norton issued a lawsuit in a District
Court on February 20 to change
the verdict, but retracted it two days
later
At 6ft 2in and 17st 71bs, the 30-
year-old, who is bigger than his
father, was told no exception would
be made and that if he was allowed
to compete, it would set a dangerous
precedent.
Norton Jnr, whose mother left
home when he was a boy, helped his
father overcome injuries from a serious
motorbike accident in 1986. The
pair then had a rift, but reunited in
1995. Ken Jnr, who has no boxing
experience, hoped to compete in the
super-heavyweight novice division,
boxing over three one-minute rounds
with lOoz gloves and headguards.
MIKE TYSON'S former trainer
Kevin Rooney says he is prepared
to go all the way to the
Supreme Court to fight his case
against the fighter he coached to
the WBC heavyweight title over 10
years ago when it was decided the
$4,415,651 he was awarded in Federal
Court last September was
done so after judge Thomas
McAvoy had advised the jurors
improperly.
THE choice isn't particularly appealing, but Barry Hearn is hoping
hard-hitting Namibian HARRY SIMON topples classy southpaw
RONALD WRIGHT in Manchester on March 22.
The winner, says Hearn, must box No. I contender ADRIAN DODSON,
who fights at Brentwood on March 8, within 60 days.
MICHAEL AYERS, another of Hearn's boxers leading the WBO rankings,
may get his chance at lightweight champion ARTUR GRIGORIAN
on April 26, probably in Hamburg.
