IRELAND'S DAVE 'BOY' McAULEY, the former IBF Hyweight champion,
had no difficulties walking away. "Between 1992 and 1995 1
had three offers to fight for a 'world' title," he said.
"But I knew when to get out. Any fighter who tells me they are doing
it because they enjoy it needs their head tested. If you enjoy it, stick to
the amateurs, but pro boxing is a business.
"I've got it out of my system. My intention was to come out with my
marbles and a bit of money, and I did that.
"What fighters miss is the limelight, not the fighting."
McAuley, 35, heftier than in his fighting days, has settled happily into
retirement and runs a hotel on the Larne coast with his family.
BRITISH welterweight king
KEVIN LUESHING disputes
his position at No. 3 in our rankings
two weeks ago.
• "I'm surprised to be rated
behind EAMONN LOUGHRAN
and GARY JACOBS," he says.
"I have not been given the
opportunity to defend my title
because the Board of Control
did not consider anyone worthy
enough to challenge for it.
"If you ignore my British title
and base the ratings on merit, I
can still argue that Loughran
has not boxed for almost a year
and Jacobs hcts moved up to
Jight-middleweight."
With Jacobs boxing JIMMY
VINCENT at list in the
Lewisham Theatre, Catford on
March 25, Lueshing will automatically
go up, so the argument
is whether he should be
above or below Loughran?
And based on their previous
performances, Lueshing's tworound
defeat by Felix Trinidad
for the IBF title has to be considered
better than Loughran's
one-round loss to Jose Luis
Lopez for the WBO crown.
THOUGH CHRIS EUBANK is
busy preparing himself for his
March 27 10-rounder against
Colombian CAMIUO ALARCON in
Dubai, new European champion
CRAWFORD ASHLEY has been stirring
the pot for a potential showdown
later this year.
Eubank, reportedly, has shown
some interest in a S350,000 offer
made by Ashley's backers Panix
Promotions and said he would deal
with the offer when he returned to
Britain next month.
