IT made me feel old to discover that
Alfonso Zamora was suffering from
gout and Bernabe "Baby" Vazquez had
retired from all boxing involvement.
Vazquez was one of the great school of
Mexican boxers around in the Fifties and
Sixties.

THE WBF lightweight tiUe
found a home as JIIAN LAZCANO
settled business with DANNY
LUJAN and lifted the vacant joker's
cap - 1 can't bring myself to call it a
crown - with a fourth-round stoppage
in Reseda on Februcu-y 20.
These two drew in a fight for the
same title last December.

EVERYBODY has been touting
Roy Jones, Pernell Whitaker or
Oscar De La Hoya as the best fighter in
the game, but boxing's "Little Big
Man," Ricardo Lopez made the 19th
defence of his WBC straw-weight title
and improved his record to 4W) by
trouncing tough southpaw IVIongkil
Cliareon on the Hilton
undercard. Scores were
120-107 (twice) and 119-
108. On three judges'
cards, Lopez lost just one
round.

LEGENDARY Julio Cesar Chavez
entered the Hilton ring while a
Mexican band blared dramatically, but
once the entrance was over, dangerman
Tony Martin nailed the onceinvincible
grand champion repeatedly
with overhand rights and had his face
flushed and left eye swollen badly
Chavez won a lopsided unanimous
10-round decision by 98-91 and 97-92
(twice). He claimed he was still in his
prime, but the 34-year-old was a shell
of what he was. Martin proved it.
