IT has been a terrible time for
cancellations. First Evander
Holyfield-Mike Tyson, then
Terry Norris-Felix Trinidad
and now Andrew Golota-Ray
Mercer. Golota pulled out of
his May 16 heavyweight clash
with Mercer at Madison Square
Garden after sustaining a back
injury in training in West Palm
Beach, Florida.
FRANK WARREN has lodged a
^ complaint with the Board
regarding Andy Holligan's British
light-welterweight title defence
against fellow-Scouser Carl Wright,
which he hoped to stage at the Everton
Park Leisure Centre on May 15.
Warren contends he has a contract
lodged with the Board and
signed by Holligan's manager But
Holligan boxed in Hull on Monday
instead (see pages 10-12).
NEVILLE BROWN can boast a
finer record - five consecutive
defences - as British middleweight
champion than
cinyone before him. But unlike
some of his predecessors such as
Herol Grahcim, Tony Sibson and Alan
Minter, the 31-year-old from Burton
has been unable to make the transition
on to the European stage.
In his second attempt on Saturday
he came tantalisingly close against
rugged Frenchman Hsissine Cherifl,
dropping the champion in the first and
third and imposing a standing count in
the opener also, only to walk into a big
right in the sixth from which he never
recovered.
