MICHAEL AYERS' WBO lightweight title shot has been a long
time coming, but he gets his chance to dethrone ARTUR
GRIGORIAN in Stuttgart on May 31 on a bill featuring two other
British fighters - super-middleweight JOE CALZAGHE and WBO
bantamweight champion ROBBIE REGAN.
After over a year out of the ring, Regan will box twice - barring
injuries - inside 22 days, with his mandatory title defence against
Colombian JORGE JUUO set for Cardiff on June 21.
Calzaghe will box Brazilian LUCL\NO TORRES over 10 rounds on
the Stuttgart bill, which will be promoted by Peter Kohl.

FORMER three-time European
champion ERNST WEISS
has died after a long illness at
home in Vienna. He was 85.
Weiss lost a narrow decision to
Valentin Angelmann for the
Internation^ Boxing Union version
of the world flyweight title in
December 1936 in Paris, a verdict
which cost him the European title
he had won two months earlier by
outpointing Fortunato Ortega of
Spain, also in Paris.
He was European bantamweight
champion for three months in
1939, knocking out Aurel Toma of
Romania in 12 rounds in August,
and lost on points to Gino Cattaneo
in November. Both fights were
in Beriin.
His reign as Euro featherweight
champ was even shorter: on 30
May 1941 in Vienna he outpointed
Lucien Popescu of Romania, but
four weeks later lost on points to
Italy's Gino Bondavilli.
