AS much as I admire
Ensley Bingham and
respect him as a world-class
puncher, I believe his style is
made to order for British
light-middleweight champion
Ryan Rhodes, a contest
which Frank Warren will stage
before the end of July.
I can picture Bingham's face
if and when he reads this, and
with his power I could end up
with egg on my face, but it is
nevertheless another intriguing
pairing.
Michael Brodie's mandatory
British super-bantamweight
title defence against
the Scot Wilson Docherty,
also won by promoter Warren,
could go ahead on the
same show.

BKITISI Hans will be able lo
watch Lennox Lewis' WHC
heavyweight title defence against
Henry Akinwande live on Sky
from midnight on July 12 (no
pay-p('r-view). The match takes ..
|)lace at a .•{,.'i()IKseater arena at
Cae.sars, Lake Tahoe 4pm local
time.
"I'm pleas(!(l all the politics
and inessitig around is over,"
.said Lewis. "I just want to get on
with my career ltocau.se of all
the trouble I will make Akinwaride
|)ay."
Frank Maloney, L(wis' manager,
has no doubts the champion
will win. "1 think Lennox will stop
him. Akinwande has not mixed in
Lewis' class. Herbie Hide found
that out when he stepped up to
(U^fend his title against Kiddick
I'jowe in 199.')." Lewis will earn an
estimated $.').2in.
Maloney will run a promotion
in I lull the same night, featuring
British featherweight king Paul
Ingle, which will lead into the
Lewis telecast from America. No
opponent has been named for
Ingle, who is chasing a Lonsdale
Belt, though a defence against
Duke McKenzie or Commonwealth
champion Jon Jo Irwin
has been suggested. The Hull bill
will feature lour title fights,
including (iary Jacobs.

• NOT surprisingly, Richie Woodhall has followed in the footsteps of
Neville Brown, Joe Calzaghe and Bruce Scott by signing a promotional
deal with Frank Warren, moving from Mickey Duff.
"Frank has guaranteed me a 'world' title shot," said Woodhall, who lost in a
WBC middleweight title bid in October 1996 against Keith Holmes in Washington
DC.

"It's hard to refuse an offer like this. Leaving Mickey was a hard decision,
but I couldn't see where 1 was going to get another 'world' title
shot with him.
"I'm 29 and can't afford to hang around. Warren has a big stable and it's a
case of 'If you can't beat them, join them'."
Woodhall's inclusion at 12st makes the super-middleweights a fiercelycompetitive
division, with Steve Collins and Robin Reid holding 'world' titles,
Calzaghe, Dean Francis and David Starie all on the rise, plus Henry Wharton,
Mark Delaney, Mark Baker and Cornelius Carr still in contention
