HECTOR CAMACHO h a d some
of us fooled, if not into believing
that he was going to
win, then that he Wcis going
to give a good account of
himself and push Oscar De La Hoya
to the limit.
STEVE COLLINS has started
training for his October
11 WHO super-middleweight
title defence against unbeaten
southpaw JOE CALZAGHE.
The Irishman went eight
rounds in the gym in Los
Angeles, sparring with former
IBF title challenger Antoine
Byrd and former WBO lightmiddleweight
champion Paul
'Silky' Jones.
"He's confident," said trainer
Freddie Roach.
SUGAR RAY LEONARD has been in Australia
recently, but it had nothing to do with fighting
old rival ROBERTO DURAN a fourth time. The match,
however, may come off according to Mike Acri, advisor
of both former 'world' champions.
"It may be in Australia, but we are also looking at
Montreal." said Acri. "Leonard injured his ankle, not
his calf, but he didn't want it to look like he was complaining.
He still wants a few tune-up bouts, though."
DON KING'S federal retrial in New York on an
insurance fraud charge, set to start with jury
selection on September 10, was postponed indefinitely.
No reason was given.
King is accused of trying to collect $350,000 in
non-existent training expenses from Lloyd's of London
following a cancelled Julio Cesar Chavez-Harold
Brazier bout in 1991.
The first trial on the charge in 1995 ended in a
hung jury. If convicted, King faces up to 45 years in
prison and a $2.2m fine.
