TEN YEARS ago Eddie Lloyd (right) turned towards referee
Ivor Bassett at the end of a Welsh title fight convinced he had
just become a champion. But Bassett was unable to split
Lloyd West Walicin and Stanley Jones.
History has repeated himself. Once again the Rhyl man,
now 31, was sure he had won a Welsh crown. But once again
Bassett could give him no more than a share of the honours
after a thrilling challenge to Welsh super-featherweight king
J.T. Williams.

YOUNG novice featherweight
Robert Grubb (9st
21bs) and Andrew Smith
(9st lib) produced the
fight of the night at the
Walsall Sporting Club.
They fought out a
crowd-pleasing, virtually
clinch-free six twos draw,
referee Jim Pridding, who
officiated throughout,
scoring 59 points each.

ROY JONES makes the first
defence of his IBF super-middleweight
championship
tomorrow (Saturday) when he
takes on fellow American
Antoine Byrd in Jones' home
town of Pensacola, Florida.
Jones will be hoping to
prove that he's the best
pound-for-pound fighter in the
world after Pernell Whitaker
staked his clciim to that mantle
a fortnight ago by beating
Julio Cesar Vasquez to win a
title at a fourth different
weight.

DAFUUSZ MICHALCZEWSKl,
(12st 5 3/41bs) produced the
best punch of his career
when he needed it most,
flooring Roberto Dominguez
(12st 3/4lbs) at 1 min 5
sees of the second round, to
retain his WBO light-heavyweight
tile before 7,500
ecstatic paying fans and
some hundred guests.

NOT A GOLOTA FUN
• POLISH heavyweight
ANDREW GOLOTA
made it 22 wins with a
first round stoppage of
poor DWAYNE HALL in
Rosemont on January 26.
It was a disgraceful
match. On the same show
ROCKY MARTINEZ
retained his Illinois lightwelterweight
title by outpointing
veteran ALI
KAREEM MUHAMMAD.
Rocky has 15 wins. In a
super-middleweight bout
Canadian CHRIS JOHNSON
won on points over
durable ERIC FRENCH.
