IRISH-BORN DEREK "THE REBEL" ROCHE, Leeds
(lOst 11 3/4Ib8) was too good for Grimsby's RICK
NORTH (lOst 9Ibs), who was rescued after 1-16 of the second
of a six-threes. Roche is a little bit upright, but a useful
prospect He rushed his work in the first and shipped a
right hand on the way in that made him think, but in
round two took over. Roche let fly inside and North stum- ,
bled over. It seemed like a slip or a shove as much as the
right hand that was thrown, but it was then obvious that
North had been genuinely stung as he laboured up at four.
He was thrown to the canvas soon after and his
ambition just drained away. Roche pounded forward
and landed a right hand over the top to put him down
again. North beat the count but was rightly rescued.
BRISTOL'S Glenn Catley went one better
' than two weeks earlier when he knocked
| o u t Carlos Christie in t h e t h i r d of a
scheduled eight-threes in the main event
at Chris Sanigar's dinner show at the Marriott
Hotel.
Despite vowing never to o p e r a t e in supermiddleweight
territory again, Catley ( l i s t 91bs)
looked more dangerous for this second excursion,
weighing in at closer to his normal fighting
weight than when he outpointed the capable
Midlander in their first encounter over this
same distance.
•FIDEL CASTRO SMITH, the former British supermiddleweight
champion, has retired.
Smith (pictured above), who worlcs as a social
worker in Nottingham, has not boxed for 18 months
and finishes with a record of 22 wins from 29 fights.
All but one of his defeats were on points. A disqualification
to Italian Francesco Dell A'quila in July 1988
wcis the exception.
The 32-year-old wanted to mcike his departure
official. He lost his last two fights - on points over
six rounds to Sam Storey and to James Cook for the
vacant British title. Both were disputed.
• BRIGG cruiserwelght DEAN
WRAY (ISst 12 I/2lbs) also
sold bundles of tickets for his
debut, but found CUFF ELDEN
(13st 7lbs) too good for him.
The 6ft 4in Wray tended to
hang his chin out, which was an
inviting prospect for Elden in the
frequent toe-to-toe exchanges.
Wray is basically a raw novice,
but his obvious enthusiasm and
guts could not be faulted.
• However, in the third a
straight right sent him into the
ropes, plainly distressed. He half
turned away as Elden followed up
with two or three more blows and
O'Connor waved the fight over one
minute 23 seconds into the third. It
was a six-twos.
