SWANSEA bantam Peter Harris turned in a sparkling
performance to stop Southern Area bantam champ Johnny
Dorey, of Eltham, in the sixth of a scheduled eight
threes main event before a sparse crowd at the York Hall.
Brave Dorey (8st 73/»lbs) was rescued, somewhat belatedly,
by referee Harry Gibbs at the 1.15 mark of round
six, as ginger-haired Harris (8st 91bs) had the Londoner
backed against the ropes and was pouring in punches.
Dorey was crying in pain and disappointment as he left the
ring, and he announced his retirement afterwards.

NEW British light-heavyweight champion Dennis Andries
and his predecessor Tom Collins renew their rivalry at
Watford Town Hall tonight (Friday).
Andries became king of the division at the ripe old age of
30 — and at the third time of asking — on January 26 when he
outhustled Collins over 12 rounds on a Greg Steene promotion
at the Strand Lyceum.

ONE year out of the ring is a long time for any fighter, and a period of three or
five years can leave rust that permanently impairs efficiency. In view of this, the
recent victorious return to the ring by Rafael Ortega was a remarkable feat.
The former WBA featherweight champion outpointed Ernesto Arce in
Panama City on February 18. It was Ortega's first fight since losing his title to
Cecilio Lastra in December 1977, over six years ago. Rafael is 33, so let's hope
his comeback is a brief one.

THE Navy's season suffered further hammer-blows as
four of their seven title hopefuls crashed out of the ABA
Championships at the quarter-final stage at the Connaught
Drill Hall in the annual Combined Services-Western
Counties match-up.
And two of the Senior Service losers, Colin Day and
Brian Kearney, looked decidedly unlucky.
