THERE was controversy in the scheduled
eight threes between southpaw
NICK WILSHIRE (list 2lbs) and
Zaire's WO LAMANI WO (lOst
13'/2lbs).

PICK of a splendid Albert Hall
undercard was the classic featherweight
encounter between
Clyde Ruan and Pat Doherty, won
on points by Ruan who successfully
defended his Southern Area
title and won the British title final
eliminator over 12 rounds, writes
TIM MO.

JONJO GREENE found his
rhythm in the final rounds
of his scheduled eightrounder
against substitute
(of two hours notice) BERNIE
KAVANAGH to force
a stoppage by referee Ron
Hackett with only 41
seconds of the eight and last
round remaining on Jack
Trickett's Belle Vue promotion.

Frank Bruno and Mark Kaylor has been much discussed
and dissected. In America as well as in Britain, as the
fights were televised live over the NBC network coast to
coast for Sunday afternoon viewing.

SUGAR RAY LEONARD had to find out if the old magic was still
there. It wasn't, and his second retirement — this time for good —
leaves glum faces among prospective opponents who hoped for the
richest fight of their lives.
Marvin Hagler, Aaron Pryor and Donald Curry were at the
Worcester, Massachusetts ringside to see Leonard attempt to pick up
where he'd left off in the comeback
bout with Kevin Howard.
All hoped to meet Sugar
Ray. Each now knows his personal
dream match is not to be.
A lot of fighters would have
been pleased to have fought as
well as Leonard did in the
ninth round stoppage victory.
But Leonard isn't just another
fighter.

boxing show at the Porter Tun
Rooms, Chiswell Street, in the City
of London, brought them a thumping
profit of around £6,000.
The excellent event, sponsored by J. B.
Riney, was attended by boxing scribe and
chief speaker Reg Gutteridge. Alongside
him were John H. Stracey, Charlie Magri,
Graham Moughton and Dave Odwell.
