• ALL-TIME great Joe Louis, now in
a wheel-chair, crowns Ken Norton as
WBC heavyweight champion at a
distasteful little ceremony at Las
Vegas last week.
LEON SPINKS, the real world champ,
still awaits a firm data for his return
with Muhammad Alt. The WBC stripped
him for his refusal to meet Norton first
but, says Loon: "I decide who and when
I fight. I never signed any contract to
fight Norton."
MAURICE HOPE can surely not be denied much
longer by the WBC in his c h a n c e for a s e c o n d shot at
the world title. But in the meantime he keeps trim
with a 10-rounder against American journeyman
Melvin Dennis in the main event on promoter Mike
Barrett's Albert Hall s h ow on Tuesday.
CHARLIE MAGRI goes for his fifth
pro win in as many fights in the
Albert Hall chief support over eight
rounds. Charlie has stopped all his
opponents to date and looks likely to
do the same to French champ
Dominique Cesari.
AN EXPLOSIVE Central
Area heavyweight championship
match at the
Yorkshire Executive Sporting
Club ended in sensational
fashion with the champion,
Neil Malpass (15-3),
retaining his title stretched
flat out on his back.
VERNON PENPRASE, 19-year-old Devonport
featherweight, could be on the
brink of trading a growing collection of
amateur trophies for hard cash.
Following defeat in the Western Counties
finals he announced he was turning in
the amateur game. It now remains to be
seen whether he joins the paid ranks.
Vernon lost a majority verdict to Steve
Eden-Winn — a hotly disputed decision.
