LARRY HOLMES, swallowing blood from a cut inside his
mouth, first outboxed Ken Norton and finally outfought him to
win the World Boxing Council's heavyweight title on a 15-
rounds split decision at the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion.

HOME boxers Tommy Thompson and Mick Holmes got
host country Ireland off to an excellent first week's start in
the European junior championships when they both
recorded decisive wins in their opening bouts at the
National Stadium.

BIG JOE AWOME, whilst under no illusion that winning
the Commonwealth Games title in Edmonton will be easy,
is positive of his intention. "I am going there for the Gold
Medal and no less. I'll be trained to peak fitness and ready
for any of them. I don't care who they are, they'll have a lot
to beat," he says.

DENTON RUDDOCK, Camberwell's former Southern
Area heavyweight champion, has his first fight since being
stopped by John Gardner when he travels to Johannesburg
to face South African puncher Kallie Knoetze on July 1.
