THE deaths last week of Angelo
Jacopucci and Salvador Pons have
brought the predictable reactions
and over-reactions.
The Spanish Federation
suspended all
boxing until July 27 as a
mark of respect (a decision
originally misreported
as an indefinite
ban in the sport).

BRITISH middleweight champion Alan Minter is firmly on
course for his world title chance after his 12th round
knockout of Angelo Jacopucci regained him the vacant
European title, but his victory turned sour when the Italian
champion collapsed in the early hours of the following
morning and died two days later after unsuccessful operations
for a brain haemorrhage, writes Harry Mullan.

A COUPLE of months ago, the
Boxing Writers of America announced
in New York something
I've he^n telling people for years,
that S .gar Ray Robinson was the
best boxer who ever lived! The
former welter and middleweight
champion outpolled Muhammad
Ali by a 4-1 margin with Joe Louis
third.

THANKS to the withdrawal of the powerful Ugandans for political reasons, the
medal chances of the four home countries — England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland — are now so much brighter. But only the nine-man English
squad have, I feel, the necessary ability to bring home a large number of medals.
Only Kenya, Nigeria and
possibly Zambia look
stronger than England.
Certainly, Englishmen
should score well in the
higher weight categories.
Light-heavy Vince Smith
(Kyrle Hall) and heavy Joe
Awome (Woking), on
known form look certain
medallists.

SULLEY SHITTU of Ghana was stripped of his bantamweight title by the
Commonwealth Championships Committee at the offices of the British Board of
Control in London.
Shittu had already been
given two dates by which to
defend his title against a
recognised contender. The
first was December 31,1977,
and he received a second
extension until June 30,
1978.
