ROCKY KELLY rounded off a great year with an
impressive fifth-round stoppage of Belgian welterweight
champion Franky Decaestecker at an almost
deserted Wembley Conference Centre.
NEWCASTLE heavyweight John Westgarth jumped up the
ratings with a fifth round stoppage over North East rival Dave
Garside in a thrilling topliner on Frankie Deans's sellout show
at Buddy's Club.
FORMER WBA light-middleweight champion DAVEY
MOORE sensationally blew his chance of regaining his
old crown when he was disqualified for hitting Frenchman
LOUIS ACARIES after the bell to end the ninth
round of their final eliminator.
REGGIE MEEN of Desborough, who was the oldest surviving
British heavyweight champion, has died at his home in Chatham,
Ontario, Canada, after a heart attack. He was 77 on November 20.
He and his wife Freda took a regular holiday in Britain each year,
and indeed were here only a few months ago. He was a member of
the Leicester Ex-Boxers' Association, where he formerly lived.
LATE withdrawals and bad luck with at least a couple of
the eight split verdicts cost England a 6-4 defeat in the full
international against West Germany, at Munster on
December 9.
The bouts involving bantam Sean Murphy and lightwelter
Ted Kershaw were tight enough to have swung the
result identically in England's favour in a match which
involved some bizarre scoring to say the least.
Light-middle John Melfah and light-heavy Clive Edwards
were llth-hour inclusions who lost. There was no
bout at middle after ABA champion Brian Schumacher
was forced to withdraw.
